What Happens When Shingles Are Missing?
Missing shingles do not look aesthetically pleasing, and they can cause some serious problems for your home. On average, an asphalt roof will last 20-25 years. If you have an asphalt roof that was installed over a previous layer, you may need to replace it sooner. However, for those with a first layer can easily have their roof re-roofed by laying a shingles over that layer!
The biggest worry is waterlogging. Waterlogging leads to wood rot, mold, damaged drywall, and possibly flooding. It’s a good idea to have the missing shingles repaired as quickly as possible to keep your home intact. Call Kanga Roof for a free inspection and estimate on repair or re-roofing your home.
When Do I Need a Roof Replacement?
How do you know it’s time to replace a roof? Here are some signs to watch for:
- Curled and crumbling shingles. There is a good sign you have some old shingles and its time to have the roof replaced. Normally curled and crumbling shingles means your shingles are not effectively doing their job and must be replaced. One way to know is to take a look in the gutter for any shingles crumbs that are starting to clog the drains.
- Check the attic for water leaks. Take a flashlight in the attic and look at all of the interior walls to see if there are any warped surfaces, or even worse, rodents and pests that have gotten in. If you have old flashing around vents, it can leak, and its not hard for pests to squeeze their way into those holes.
- Soft surface. Working on a roof is dangerous and we do not recommend getting up on it without proper safety gear. One way we know a roof isn’t strong is when you have a soft roof board. If there is a bouncing feeling when you walk on the roof, it normally means water has seeped into the shingles and its starting to warp the boards.
